Finding Pax: women in the wooden boat world through owning/maintaing a Danish spidsgatter
Talks & demonstrations
Event description
Kaci Cronkhite - Circumnavigator, author, wooden boat enthusiast, NWMC & WBF managing director & Festival director, Kaci resisted owning a boat for a decade, even with the extreme temptations crossing her path every day at the Wooden Boat Foundation. In August 2007, she succumbed to an almost 70 year old Danish double-ender (spidsgatter) named Pax. Through the first year of hull, rigging and ownership; with a second year of sailing and an infinite list of tweaks in years to come on her horizon, peace is redefined. Kaci visited important maritime sites and harbors, conducted research in archives and at sail clubs, got aboard more than 20 spidsgatters on land or at docks and went sailing with spidsgatter owners in Denmark and Sweden this summer as part of her ongoing research. Besides showing the work of skilled women shipwrights, riggers, sailmakers, brightwork and crew from Port Townsend, Kaci shares photos from her findings in Denmark.
