The Port Townsend High School Sailing Team at Northwest Maritime Center is led this season by an unprecedented five adult coaches bringing a nearly 3:1 student-to-coach ratio for the 16 racers who range in age from 13 to 18. Meet the 2009 coaches: Chris Higgins, Head Instructor Learn to Sail, artist and woodworker; Spencer Snapp, WBF HS Sail Team in the 90s, SF Maritime Academy graduate and now a Merchant Marine working aboard Chevron ships; Erik Coburn, collegiate racer, owner of a 505, Edensaw Woods staffer and last year's coach; Joe Daubenberger, High School Sail Coach in the 90s and accomplished dinghy sailor/racer; Sugar Flannigan, skipper/owner of Schooner Alcyone and father of the team Captain, Alyce Flannigan.
This year's team is off to its best ever start. The group is 50/50 girl/boy and includes racers from Port Townsend and Chimacum high schools, homeschoolers, OPEPO and Blue Heron middle school.
Watch them practice: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday from 2:30-5:30 within view of the Boat Haven heavy haulout. The team runs drills, then ends with a sailing/racing and skills talk. Next race: Mar 28 & 29 Island Cup Regatta, Friday Harbor. The crew will travel to the competition on the Schooner Alcyone, a sail training vessel in Puget Sound and on the oceans.
