Longboats Busy With Youth Sailing Adventures in the San Juan Islands Longboats Busy With Youth Sailing Adventures in the San Juan Islands Students and teachers work together to operate the longboat Bear on a San Juan Island sailing adventure.

Students from both the Evergreen School in Seattle and Flathead Valley Community College (FVCC) Upward Bound program participated separately in sailing adventures in the San Juan Islands on the longboat Bear. The expeditions both originated out of Anacortes, travelling under oar and sail power to the eastern islands of the San Juans for up to a week.

The Upward Bound students have just graduated from high school and are entering college programs this Fall. FVCC Upward Bound instructor Mike McGarvey commented "we really like the team building aspects of the longboat experience, and we are looking at integrating this experience earlier into our curriculum."

Three Evergreen School students returned from last year's sailing adventure on the longboats, joined by 5 new crew for their week-long adventure.

School groups regularly enjoy the team development that happens on a multi-day longboat experience.
